THE CELT

In the darkness you could hear the crying of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men. Some prayed for help. Others wished for death. But still more imagined that there were no Gods left, and that the universe was plunged into eternal darkness.

history
❝In the darkness you could hear the crying of women, the wailing of infants, and the shouting of men. Some prayed for help. Others wished for death. But still more imagined that there were no Gods left, and that the universe was plunged into eternal darkness.❞ - Pliny the Younger, A.D. 79.
Milo grew up in the first century, AD. He hails from one of the Celtic tribes of Northern Britannia, which made habit of raiding along trading routes and generally creating problems for the Roman Empire. His particular tribe was well known for its affinity for horses, and Milo claims to have learned to ride one before even learning to walk. Nomadic in nature, Milo's people lived off the land and off of plunder picked from small, poorly defended settlements and off robbing traders.

When Milo's people rose up in rebellion of Roman occupation, it was a very short rebellion. After refusing the surrender terms offered, they found themselves swiftly and thoroughly smashed beneath the fist of the Empire. On the night that his clan was slaughtered, Milo (about six at the time) was presumed dead and hauled into the mass grave with the rest of his clan, only to crawl out the next morning when all the Romans had gone. Before they left, however, they hung several bodies from a tree as a warning to any other clans in the area who might get ideas about rebelling as well, an image that still haunts Milo's dreams. He roamed the countryside in a state of shock for several days after that, and was picked up by slavers traveling along the newly safe trade routes when found.

Sold to a Gladiator school, Milo has been trained to fight for entertainment for a decade and a half. However, whatever success his skill might earn him has been severely limited by the fact that he is continually bought and sold to different arenas all over the Empire, never staying in one place long enough to become famous or earn enough coin to buy his own freedom. His repeated reselling is largely due to the fact that Milo is ornery and belligerent and altogether not worth nearly as much trouble as he causes. He is always able to fetch high prices due to impressive performances in the arena, but most of his masters have been too smart to keep him around for long, so he gets shown off and sold again and again.

Early on he made an effort to befriend his fellow gladiators, but was then forced to kill a close friend in combat in his teenage years and has since become incredibly gun-shy about getting to know anybody he might have to fight someday, going so far as to turn potential allies into openly disliking him by being rude or aloof. It's not a good long-term survival strategy, basically, so he's lucky he's in a movie called Pompeii.
